Today’s Card of the Day honors hockey legend Mark Messier. On this day in 1995, Messier became the third player (joining Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri) in NHL history to record 100 playoff goals.
Messier played in 1,756 games (2nd All-Time to Gordie Howe) during his 25 years in the NHL and was a 6-time winner of the Stanley Cup. For his career, he scored 694 goals and had 1,193 assists, good for the third-most points in the leagues history. He played in 15 All-Star games, won the Hart Trophy twice, the Ted Lindsay Trophy twice and a Conn Smythe trophy in 1983-84.
While Messier was a force for Edmonton Oilers alongside Wayne Gretzky, his US fame when he captained the New York Rangers. He helped lead the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup victory in 54 years during the 1993-94 season.
Messier is found on plenty of cards. His 1980 OPC Rookie Card can be found for $20 on the low-end and over $4,000 in PSA 10. His cheapest authentic autographed card is his 1996-97 Be A Player Card and it can be purchased starting at around $25.
