Richard Hidalgo is probably best remembered for his power-hitting peak with the Houston Astros but his career included stops with the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. He was affectionately known by his nickname “Doggy”.
Hidalgo signed with the Astros as an amateur free agent in 1992 and quickly emerged as one of the organization’s top prospects. He made his MLB debut in 1997 and became a regular in Houston’s lineup by the late 1990s. His breakout season came in 2000, when he delivered one of the most impressive offensive years in franchise history. That season, he hit .314 with 44 home runs, 122 RBIs, and a 1.028 OPS, finishing among the National League leaders in multiple categories and earning his first and only All-Star selection. He twice finished in the Top 20 of MVP voting as an Astro.
Known for his strong throwing arm and ability to play all three outfield positions, Doggy was a key contributor during the Astros’ rise to playoff contention. Despite a relatively short peak, fans fondly remember him for his explosive offensive talent and being a key contributor during the team’s peak. You can find his career stats on Baseball-Reference.
