Retail Therapy: 2020 Topps Series One Blaster Box

Each year collectors await the release of Topps Series One. It’s the kickoff product for the baseball collecting year and usually comes out right around the time Spring Training is beginning.

This year has obviously been a different type of year, with multiple products being released before the season starts and even Topps Series Two on the market.

Topps Series One features a very strong rookie card class including 2019 Rookie of the Year Yordan Alvarez, Gavin Lux, Dustin May, Brendan McKay, Aristides Aquino and Bo Bichette.

Series One also has tons of inserts and subsets to collect. You can find the ever popular image variation cards in both SP (Short Print) and SSP (Super Short Print) versions and various autographed cards.

A blaster box costs $19.99 and contains 7 packs of 14 cards. Each box also contains a special bonus pack of one Rookie Card Retrospective Logo Medallion Card. There’s also one retail-exclusive Turkey Red Insert Card per pack.

Grade: B

This was another fun break. I absolutely love the Turkey Red Inserts. I’ll finish that set either with eBay or COMC pickups. The Rookie Card Retrospective Cards are cool in person and I’ve been a big fan of Kris Bryant since he was a High School player. The 1985 inserts are great looking cards and I’m really tempted to send the Mussina off through the mail (TTM) for an autograph. Also getting Rookie Cards of Gavin Lux and Dustin May were nice pulls.

On the negative side, I would have liked to have gotten a player version of the Decades’s Best Insert rather than a team based card, but at least I pulled one. Anther negative is that Topps has canceled this year’s Home Run Challenge Contest, so I won’t get to use my Joey Gallo card.
